What is LED Lighting?
LED lights are a highly efficient form of lighting that utilize array's of light emitting diodes to produce light. LED lamps are capable of producing equivalent light to conventional incandescent light globes while consuming as little as 20% of the total energy. LED's are solid state light emitters, they do not make use of a filament or gas encapsulated in a glass globe. Instead LED's utilise a layer of semiconductor material that glows when an electric current is passed through them.
In the past LED lights were mainly used for low light applications such as indicators on vehicles, lights on toys or electronic equipment. However with improvements in technology over the years, LED's now have the ability to produce similar or even more light than conventional light sources. Today LED lighting is becoming a standard type of lighting for homes and commercial environments. It's highly efficient and long lasting nature makes it a perfect investment.
Why LED Lighting?
LED lighting has several major advantages over older types of halogen, incandescent and CFL lights.
LED lights utilize 80-90% less energy than incandescent and halogen lights. This greatly reduces overall electricity consumption since lighting can contribute anywhere between 20-40% of a buildings energy needs. With the sharp increase in electriciy costs over the years, LED lighting can help save money.
LED lights produce up to 5 times less heat than conventional lights. This makes it ultra safe for use in your ceiling. Did you know majority of fires in homes are caused by ignition of roof insulation due to halogen downlights? Another great advantage of the low heat output is the reduced stress on the buildings cooling system. More than half of the energy consumed by halogen downlights are released as heat into the roof space where airconditioning ducts are present. LED downlights on the other hand produce very little heat keeping your roof space and internal rooms cool during summer.
Types of LED Lighting
LED lights are available in various shapes and sizes similar to conventional light fittings. The most common types of LED lights are LED downlights which nowdays are a standard method of lighting rooms such as kitchens, living areas, dinings and even bedrooms. LED downlights provide a mordern look and feel to a living space and are a must have for new homes. Other types of LED lights commonly used in homes and offices are ceiling LED panels which are similar to conventional oyster lights and fluoroscent panels and LED bulbs which can be used in desk lamps, table lamps and decorative lamp fittings.
