FAQ
What are 240V GU10 LED Downlight globes?
240V GU10 LED Downlights are highly efficient downlights designed to replace your existing energy craving GU10 halogens. They are designed with similar dimensions and pin configurations to allow for a direct swap with GU10 base halogen downlights. 240V GU10 LED downlights do not require any transformers to run, they work directly off 240V mains voltage. GU10 LED Downlights are 80% more efficient and last up to 10 times longer than halogens.
What is the difference between 240V GU10 and 12V MR16 LED Downlights?
Do I need a transformer to run a 240V GU10 LED Downlight?
No, GU10 LED downlights do not require transformers to run. They are required to be connected directly to 240V using a GU10 downlight lamp holder.
Can I dim 240V GU10 LED Downlights?
Only our 240V GU10 Osram Parathom Pro Dimmable LED downlight can be dimmed with your current halogen downlight dimmer setup. However we do recommend using Clipsal Universal Dimmers for dimming LED downlights. Most other GU10 LED downlights cannot be dimmed, however they can still be connected to a dimmer but you will need to ensure the dimmer is placed at full brightness or else the LED will turn off.
Are 240V GU10 LED Downlights as bright as a 50W halogen downlight?
Yes, our 10W Osram GU10 Parathom Pro LED downlight will output similar light to a 50W halogen downlight.
Do 240V GU10 LED Downlights produce more heat than 12V MR16 LED Downlights?
Yes 240V GU10 LED downlights produce slightly more heat than a 12V MR16 LED downlight. The reason being, 240V GU10 LED downlights contain an inbuilt power conversion circuit that converts 240V to 12V. This power conversion circuit produces some but negligible heat. In the case of 12V MR16 LED downlights, the power conversion is done external to the LED by using a LED driver / transformer.
Do 240V GU10 LED Downlights use more power than 12V MR16 LED Downlights?
No they don't. The only difference between a 240V GU10 and 12V MR16 setup is that a 12V setup uses an external power supply whereas a GU10 downlight contains an inbuilt power supply. Both 12V and 240V LED downlight setups will consume very similar amounts of power.
Are 240V GU10 LED Downlights brighter than 12V MR16 LED Downlights?
No, a 10W 240V GU10 LED Downlight and a 10W 12V MR16 LED Downlight of the same brand will produce the exact same amount of light.
Can I connect a 240V GU10 LED Downlight to my 12V halogen downlight?
No, a GU10 LED downlight will not connect to your 12V MR16 downlight socket and will not function with a transformer. To replace your 12V MR16 halogen downlights with a 240V GU10 LED downlight, you need to get an electrician to remove your downlight transformer and wire in a GU10 downlight lamp holder to the 240V mains supply. A GU10 LED downlight will plug straight into this GU10 downlight lamp holder.
