Comparing LED downlights to halogen downlights

LED downlights work in a complete different method from halogen downlights. Halogen's make use of a glowing filament to product light whereas LED downlights utilize high efficiency silicon substrates known as Light Emitting Diodes (LED's). These LED's glow when current passes through them resulting in light.

Light Emitting Diodes are far more efficient than a glowing filament, reason being, LED's do not produce any heat, ultraviolet or infra red radiation unlike a glowing filament. This means, almost all of the energy supplied to a LED chip is converted to light. This makes LED downlights about 70-80% more efficient than halogens resulting in their ability to produce equivalent light while only using a fraction of the energy.

LED substrates aslo have a life span of between 25,000 and 50,000 hours depending on the thermal management utilized around the chip to remove any exess heat. Comparing LED's to conventional halogens that last only 2000 hours, this is an amazing 10 times longer. Just think about never having to change a downlight globe again! This can be very cost effective especially for large office or commercial properties that utilize hundreds of downlight globes. The total labour cost saved over the years from not having to change globes can result in massive savings. This makes LED downlights an excellent investment for restaurants, cafes, offices and so on.

In terms of brightness or lumen output from LED's, there are many decent brands and products our there that can produce equivalent light to halogen downlights. A few years ago, this was not possible, however in recent times, LED technology has improved drastically and the cost of manufacturing has dropped heavily making it possible to design LED downlights that produce excellent light output. A 10W LED downlight for example, is sufficient for replacing a 50W halogen downlight.

Types of LED Downlights

LED Downlights are available in either a retro fit downlight globe or a complete LED downlight kit. Retro fit downlight globes are designed to replace halogen downlights and have similar pin shapes and housing sizes as halogens. Complete LED downlight kits on the other hand are full units that incorporate LED's into their housing. Complete LED kits are designed for new installations into ceilings.
